Systems Toxicology

 

Overview: 

One of the cross-cutting Centre themes: drawing research from multiple areas of environmental toxicology, including the influence of the gut & lung microbiomes in transforming toxins, to generate new research in addition to delivering new analytical approaches (e.g. in metabolic phenotyping) for identifying mechanisms of toxicity.

Key Projects

  • Air pollution toxicity: contributions of metallic & non-metallic/organic components of abrasion products. Aim: linking findings from population studies with in vitro responses observed in current research.
  • Environmental Carcinogenesis Group (King’s College London): studies provide biomarkers of exposure & clues to the aetiology of cancer eg. cell cycle & DNA repair in human cells exposed to carcinogens.
  • Toxicogenomics (King’s College London): using the nematode & key environment organisms eg the earthworm to identify the fundamental pathways of eg. pathogenesis & ageing. Providing new methods of risk assessment, genetic risk-modifications in preventative medicine & new therapeutic targets for pharmaceutical & biological medicines.
  • Expansion of EU FP7 HELIX consortium research activity: interactions of exposures on health outcomes with multiple omics platforms among child cohorts across Europe.
  • Metabolic profiling: understanding of pathways & mechanisms underlying chronic disease risk using AIRWAVE cohort.
  • MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre: allowing access to a world-class capability in metabolic phenotyping that will benefit the UK translational medicine community. Impact of both the gut & lung microbiome using a next generation sequencing facility.
