Celebrating SAHSU’s 25th Anniversary

The Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2012. To mark the occasion the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health is holding a two day international symposium in November.

 

The Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU) was established in 1987 following a recommendation from the Black Enquiry into the incidence of leukaemia in children and young adults near the Sellafield nuclear power plant for an organisation "to coordinate centrally the monitoring of small area statistics around major installations producing discharges that might present a carcinogenic or mutagenic hazard to the public. In this way early warning of any untoward health effect could be obtained".

In 2012 SAHSU celebrates its 25th Anniversary. To honour the occasion the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health, which SAHSU is a part of, is holding a two-day international symposium entitled ‘Frontiers in Spatial Epidemiology’.

The theme of this international symposium will be forward-looking, discussing new methods and technologies in disease cluster and pattern detection, spatial data analysis, data visualisation, measurement of exposures and health risks, communicating with the public and translating science into health policy. This meeting will be comprised of plenary sessions, state of the art lectures and poster presentations and will offer individuals the opportunity to work alongside and share knowledge with international experts.

The two day symposium will open with an address by Professor Dame Sally Davies UK Chief Medical Officer & Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Health, and close with the second annual Geoffrey Rose Memorial Lecture which will be given by Sir Michael Marmot of University College London.
