We mustn't ignore the environmental impact of electric cars

 

News that battery-electric cars might not be Britain’s environmental panacea came as a huge surprise to Dispatches viewers last night. Rather than saving humanity from its particulate apocalypse, as we’d previously thought, electric cars might actually be part of the problem. In fact, as the programme revealed, ‘zero-emission’ cars actually generate plenty of emissions, just not any of the better-known ones.

Electric cars create harmful dust, which flakes off their brake pads and their tyres. Petrol and diesel cars are getting cleaner every year, which means that as a percentage this kind of non-exhaust gunk represents a large and growing proportion of particulate matter on our roads.
