Study on exposure to pollution from municipal waste incinerators published

Study on municipal waste incinerators shows they make only a small contribution to particle pollution at ground-level.

A study has been published today in the journal Environmental Science and Technology looking at an assessment of exposure to particle pollution around 22  municipal waste incinerators. This paper is part of a wider study investigating reproductive and infant health near municipal waste incinerators in Great Britain.

The assessment used real-world measurements of pollution coming from the chimney of each incinerator to predict  the impact on the surrounding area, following the same method as our more limited 2013 study (Ashworth et al. 2013 https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jeph/2013/560342/). In this new paper we found that incinerators made only a small contribution to particle pollution at ground-level which was dominated by distance sources and other local factors such as traffic.
