This year's Researcher's Society Christmas Gala will be a presentation from Professor Dame Anne Glover, entitled “Face to face with the Dark Side – science meets politics”. The talk will take place from 5 - 6 pm, and will be followed by a free drinks reception.

The title of talk: “Face to face with the Dark Side – science meets politics”.

    Abstract:

A life in science is all about discovery, analysing and using evidence, dealing with uncertainty and being creative and imaginative to solve problems.  The world of politics is a very different place.  Sometimes evidence is inconvenient as it contradicts political philosophies and uncertainty is to be avoided at any cost.  However, many governments choose to have scientific advisers and in this talk I will describe my experience working in the Brussels bubble as the first Chief Scientific Adviser to President Barosso at the European Commission.

    About the Speaker:

Professor Dame Anne Glover is currently Vice-Principal for External Affairs & Dean for Europe at the University of Aberdeen. She served as the first Chief Scientific Adviser to Scotland (2006-2011) and then the first Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission (2012-2014).
